The Atlanta Braves are taking on Athletics in hopes of winning the series as well as winning their first series in the state of California this season.

Tyler Soderstrom opened Thursday night’s game with a long home run and closed it with a one-out RBI single to give the Athletics a 5-4 11-inning victory over the Atlanta Braves.

The Athletics demoted right-hander Mitch Spence to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, one day after he served up five homers in a 9-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The offense didn’t stop there as Matt Olson singled, Austin Riley doubled, and Drake Baldwin smacked a three-run homer over the wall in right-center to make it 4-0 in the blink of an eye. It was the first time all season the Braves scored four runs (or more) in the first inning.

California has not been kind to the Braves this season. It is where they started the season 0-7 and prior to playing the Athletics had not won a game in the state. Spencer Strider will be pitching today with hopes of helping the Braves change their fortunes in the state.

ESPN handed out midseason grades for all 30 MLB teams, and spoiler alert, the Braves did not score well. The club received an “F” for its first-half performance, making it one of three organizations (with the Rockies and Orioles) to earn a failing grade.

The Athletics dominate the Braves 10-1 on Tuesday night, fueled by Lawrence Butler’s two home runs, including a leadoff inside-the-park homer.
