Two people are dead in Plainfield, New Jersey, after heavy rain pummeled much of the state on Monday, causing flash floods and dangerous conditions on the roads.

They come in part because local officials and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy seem willing to gamble that the worst climate projections won’t come to pass.

Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed that two women in Plainfield died Monday when they were trapped in their car as floodwaters from downpours surrounded that vehicle. The two women have not yet been identified. Plainfield officials say that two others died in a storm on July 3.

Federal prosecutors in New Jersey are investigating remarks that Gov. Philip D. Murphy, a Democrat, made in February.

Governor Murphy faces scrutiny after comments about housing an unauthorized immigrant in his garage sparking a federal inquiry.

The FBI has sought to interview four witnesses in connection with the New Jersey governor's comments, according to the report.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is term-limited and will be replaced next January; considering he has an approval rating somewhere between George Santos and Norovirus, my assumption is that he won't be seeking higher office for at least a little while.

“When heavy rainfall overwhelms our infrastructure and the ground’s natural ability to absorb water, we see rapid rises in water levels in rivers, streams & underground springs we never notice,” DEP Commissioner Shawn LaTourette tweeted. “When 16% of your State lies in a floodplain, that is an emergency.”
