San Francisco City Atty. David Chiu is filing a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over the threatened crackdown on sanctuary cities.

The City of San Francisco is leading a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its crackdown on sanctuary cities and states and its threat to cut off federal funding.

During his previous administration, Trump also moved to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities. Multiple appeals court panels, including those composed entirely of Republican appointees, ruled the executive branch lacked the power to override funding decisions made by Congress.

Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker says the state follows the law. President Donald Trump has often singled out Chicago and Illinois, which have some of the strongest sanctuary laws in the U.S.

The US justice department has filed a lawsuit against Chicago, accusing local officials of impeding federal immigration enforcement efforts amid Donald Trump's drive to ramp up deportations.

The city of Portland is joining a lawsuit with other sanctuary cities challenging the Trump administration’s threat to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities. The lawsuit will be filed today in United States District Court of Northern California, and is led by the city and county of San Fransisco and by the county of Santa Clara.

Santa Clara County is expected to file its second lawsuit in as many weeks against the Trump Administration on Friday — this time over an executive order that mandates federal agencies to cut off funding to local jurisdictions with sanctuary policies.

Portland will now join a coalition of local governments suing the Trump administration for executive orders and actions that harm sanctuary cities and states.
