A bill that would require the Ten Commandments to be posted in every public school classroom in Texas cleared a key legislative hurdle Sunday and is poised to go to Gov.

Senate Bill 10 moved forward despite a federal court ruling that a similar Louisiana law violated a constitutionally required separation of church and state. The bill preliminarily passed the House 88-49 on the Jewish Sabbath day,

But Texas Republicans have said a 2022 Supreme Court case paved the way for the Ten Commandments bill to become law in this state. In that case, the high court ruled that a public school football coach’s midfield prayer after games was protected by the First Amendment.
