The highlight of the week is coming tonight in the night sky - the lunar occultation of Mars.First off, at 5:27 p.m. the moon will be officially full. The full January moon is known as the "Wolf" moon.

Rising just before sunset on Monday, January 13, the Full Wolf Moon will be up all night, tonight, and will slip below the western horizon only after the Sun rises, Tuesday morning. That gives us plenty of time to take in the wonder and beauty of Earth's celestial companion.

January's full Wolf Moon will "eat" Mars for a short time tonight as the Red Planet prepares for opposition later this week.

Mars will hide behind the wolf moon Monday night as a result of a phenomenon known as an occultation, a fancy word that describes when a celestial body passes in front of another, according to NASA. Mars is currently shining the brightest we'll see it all year, according to Space.com, but the full moon's light will still drown out the red planet.

At 8:07 p.m. Monday, stargazers in Chicago will see Mars disappear behind the moon and reappear on the other side of the moon at 9:17 p.m. Also this week, multiple planets will be clearly visible in the night sky in a parade of planets.

If you decided to brave the cold last night and step outside you might have gotten a glimpse of Mars. A full moon actually passed in front of the planet in what's known as a rare lunar occulation.
