In another swift rebuke of the Trump administration, California officials announced Thursday they plan to sue the federal government over the U.S. Senate's decision to revoke a waiver allowing the state to set its own air quality standards.

Senate Republicans have voted to establish a new precedent that will allow them to roll back clean air standards in California, including a rule phasing out the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035.

California has used federal waivers to help clean up its air quality for decades. The U.S. Senate will likely revoke that Wednesday.
