Fast forward to May 15, when Schwerin became the youngest American woman to summit Mount Everest at age 17. At the top of the world, she achieved the capstone to a nearly two-year long journey, also being the youngest woman to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents, according to the mountain-climbing group Seven Summits LLC.

"In the past, wherever you looked, you would see snow-covered mountains. But now, black rocky hills have started to appear. The mountains that once looked completely white now appear as black peaks," Thakuri told the Asia News Network.

The mountain itself is nestled between Nepal and Tibet, within an autonomous region of China. Hundreds attempt to climb the peak each year, though many fail in the process.
