Toyota Motor has agreed to transfer its order for LG Energy Solution vehicle batteries to a Michigan plant that General Motors is exiting, the Japanese automaker confirmed Tuesday.

Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to shift a $1.5 billion order with LG Energy Solution to bolster operations at a Michigan battery plant after General Motors Co. backed out of the project, according to people familiar with the matter.

An electric vehicle battery company will permanently close two of its Michigan plants in April, laying off 188 workers. Akasol, a German company that was acquired by BorgWarner in 2022, filed a notice with the state of Michigan on Feb.

In a turn of events, Toyota is stepping in to support LG Energy Solution’s EV battery plant in Michigan. Toyota reportedly placed a $1.5 billion order to boost operations at the facility after GM backed out.
