Following a season that saw him lead the Cougars to an 11-2 record and also earn All-Big Honorable Mention, Retzlaff’s future in Provo got extremely murky during the offseason. Before the case was dismissed on June 30, Retzlaff was accused of raping a woman.

Retzlaff made the decision to withdraw from BYU after facing a seven-game suspension related to a violation of the school's honor code. That suspension stemmed from allegations of sexual assault, which were later dismissed in a civil lawsuit,
