The mosquito-borne chikungunya is rare in China, but the CDC urges caution and Chinese officials have taken steps compared to its COVID-19 response.

The country has seen nearly 8,000 cases of Chikungunya in less than a month, mostly in Foshan city in Guangdong province, prompting authorities to impose measures akin to the "zero Covid" policy that saw the Chinese government employ some of the strictest regulations during the pandemic.

China's Guangdong region has recorded more than 7,000 cases of a virus spread by mosquitoes since July, triggering actions similar to the Covid-19 outbreak.
